What is Prosthesis?
All artificial formations that replace aesthetic disorders or lost teeth in the mouth for various reasons and meet the aesthetic and functional needs of people are prostheses. In general, tooth loss can occur as a result of not treating gum diseases. In addition, tooth loss occurs as a result of some accidents. For this reason, prostheses that will serve the same function as functionally and aesthetically healthy teeth should be made to replace the lost teeth.
What is the Purpose of Dental Prosthesis?
In the prosthesis, while trying to regain the lost functions of the patient, it is also aimed to correct the deteriorated speech and to improve the aesthetic appearance. Thus, while the oral health, which has been lost to a large extent, is restored, individuals who have to live with missing or destroyed teeth in the society are also supported psychologically. Because individuals who have to continue their lives (even for a while) in this way, first of all forget to laugh. This, in addition to functional disorders, causes damage to the sense of self-confidence in people. It is aimed to increase the quality of life of people with various prostheses made for such patients.
Types of Prosthesis
1. Fixed Prostheses (crown-bridge-like bonded prostheses)
2. Removable Prostheses (total or partial dentures)
3. Implant prostheses (screws and prostheses placed in the jaw)
4. Single crowns (in the form of a single tooth veneer)
5. Bridges (covering missing teeth together with adjacent teeth)
Cleaning of Dentures.
Cleaning of removable dentures is done with some cleaning agents. Prostheses are cleaned by means of an effervescent tablet placed in water. If a denture cleaning agent is not available, the denture can be cleaned with a toothbrush or denture brush. In addition, partial removable dentures can be removed from the mouth and the dentures can be cleaned and replaced after the existing teeth in the mouth are cleaned. However, in total dentures, it is sufficient for the patient to remove the teeth and rinse his mouth.
Having a prosthesis does not mean that you will pay less attention to your oral hygiene and care. On the contrary, going to your dentist regularly will increase the life of your dentures and protect your oral health.
Why should you clean your dentures daily?
Daily cleaning is important to prevent plaque, food debris, and tartar buildup, which can cause the following problems:
1. Appearance and aesthetic problems.
2. Bad breath.
3. Irritation of the tissue under the prosthesis.
4. Infection in the mouth.
How can I keep my dentures clean?
After meals, remove food residues by washing your denture in water. You should brush your dentures regularly after certain meals, especially before going to bed. This process prevents plaque and stain formation. In the brushing process, water and various toothpastes or prosthetic care products are used. Abrasive powders should not be used. Otherwise, the surface of the prosthesis is scratched and residues begin to collect and color on these surfaces.
Special denture brushes or regular toothbrushes can also be used. You should take care to clean all surfaces of the prosthesis. From time to time, you can keep your prosthesis in special prosthetic fluids. You should use your prosthesis, which has been exposed to chemicals, after washing it. The most effective way to keep the prosthesis clean is to soak it in chemical liquids a few times a week along with daily brushing.
Stains and tartar that have penetrated into the denture can only be cleaned by a dentist with ultrasonic tools.
